Oh, windows. In a house full of children.
In my post for DIY All-Natural Disinfectant I talked about my beautiful finger-licking kids that reach out to touch ME or various surfaces.
Those finger-licking kids also reach out and touch windows.
Crystal clear windows.
This might sound weird, but I actually don’t mind smudges on the windows.
We live in our house. Smudged windows happen when there’s lots of life and little people and snot-nosed dogs running about.
But at some point, enough is enough and I need nice, crystal clear windows again.
Especially when children decide to lick the windows…
I’m not sure what it is about windows that make kids want to lick ‘em, but I can’t even tell you how many times “get your tongue off the window” has left my lips.
Does Natural Window Cleaner Work?
In my opinion, it’s better than anything I’ve ever bought in the store. And it comes sans toxins.
Ok, here’s an honest before and after.

So, it was pretty bad. But look at the amazing job this diy window cleaner did! Just one wipe down, for serious. (It even cleaned the dog away! ;)).
Sometimes you do have to use this spray twice, but I found that to be the case even with Windex.
No matter what your windows looks like, if you’re itching to clean ‘em, I’ve got a DIY window cleaner recipe for you.
Why you should make your own window cleaning solution
Regular store-bought window cleaner is usually a rather toxic concoction. Not to mention, blue.
Blue.
Why do we need to add dye to cleaner? That’s an artificial component that is unnecessary and just one more thing that we don’t need sitting on the surfaces of our homes.
But because my kids lick windows and stick their faces up on them, I don’t want any window-cleaner residue to be left behind that is toxic for them.
The most well-known store-bought window cleaner contains ammonia based ingredients, right along with fragrance.
Synthetic fragrances are the most widely used in store-bought household products because they’re inexpensive.
But these fragrances can cause hormone disruption, respiratory illnesses, and even cancer.
Just little ol’ fragrance.
That’s enough to get me excited about homemade window cleaner!
What ingredients do you need for the best homemade window cleaner?
You’ll just need 3 ingredients for the best window cleaner.
No essential oils. Nothing fancy.
Just alcohol, vinegar, and water.
That’s it.
For the alcohol, I’ve found isopropyl alcohol works the best. But you can also use some high-proof vodka left over from this recipe.

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup white vinegar
- 1/2 cup vodka or isopropyl/rubbing alcohol
- 1 cup filtered water
Directions
- Pour all of the ingredients in a 16oz glass spray bottle and shake. I highly suggest using glass bottles like these ones when storing anything that contains alcohol or vinegar. Both can damage plastic bottles.
- You’re already done!
Note: If you don’t like the smell of vinegar, you can replace it with more alcohol.
To Use Your DIY Window Cleaner
Mist over window or mirror and immediately wipe with a dry cloth in a circular motion.
Enjoy your see-through-able windows, mama.
